The impetus for this space was born out of a collaboration between multiple parties seeking a space for unique interactive play experiences while allowing for increased access to play in a low income area of Hawaii’s North Shore. The design work was completed over a six month period as an independent contract with KaBOOM!, a national non profit organization who provided project management collaboration. The construction was completed through efforts of volunteers over a one week period. The collaboration between multiple parties, including the community members at the YMCA, those at KaBOOM! and faculty at The University of Pennsylvania School of Design has synthesized my role as designer, project manager, and construction coordinator to be flexible and a voice for positive design practice. This playspace incorporates the underlying given constraints of topography, drainage, and existing planting while invigorating new experiential environments for children to explore. A series of wooden structures, plantings, platform stages,climbing and jumping elements are connected via a series of pathways. Thus, a social and ecological awareness is heightened through the interactive potential of the playspace. The core concept of this proposal is resilience. This is illustrated at two scales: 1) REGIONAL: New York City will incrementally become resilient to sea level rise and storm surges through the deployment of dynamic, multilayered, and adaptive strategies. Our notion of resilience is social and economic factors in addition to climatic criteria. This project traces a progressive extension of city life from land to water: subway stops; corridors of development and job creation towards the waterfront; new infrastructural piers/wave deflectors; a new tram loop encircling the entire New York harbor; ferry stations; infrastructural islands; inflatable barriers; housing + treatment wetlands; pervious infiltration network. These protective barriers, nodes of intensified urban programs, and networks of flows will promote human development and natural habitat to incrementally develop systemic resilience over time. 2) LOCAL: Infrastructural islands, located within the shallow areas of the estuary, create an archipelago of slowly accreting habitat. This urban hybrid is a neighborhood with a nexus of activity, increased accessibility to the water’s edge and varied pedestrian flows along New York’s East River Bank. A street swale system filters stormwater into constructed wetland geometries which allow for emergent ecologies to become potent. Multiplicities of experience are made possible through a redefined public open space network including bridges, walkways and water transport. As a filter for sun and shadow, a catchment for rainwater and wind break and scaffold for the growth of vegetation, the surface takes on multiple functions. This facade system is applicable in a variety of building scenarios, including new structures, revamping crumbling infrastructure,vacant lots, and parking garages. The interchangeable component system allows for variability with user selection and allows for a highly customizable facade with degrees of cover and openness.
